My Old Stompin' Grounds...
I was checking out the route for today's stage in the Tour of Cali and see that it will go right past my family's restaurant (we don't run the restaurant anymore, but it is still in business - 815 Palm Street, right near the corner of Palm and Chorro - the race route goes right down Chorro). Daggonit, and I'm in the Bay Area. Wonder if I can drive down there and beat the cyclists?
Oh, and trust me, you don't need to joke about the name of the restaurant - our family ran it for close to 50 years, so we've heard it all. Thanks!

XBun, just because just about everything on this blog is based on humor, doesn't mean EVERYTHING is. I am not joking about my family owning and running this restaurant. It is quite possibly the oldest restaurant in SLO. My grandfather started the biz and then handed it down to his two sons, my uncle and my dad.
It does still exist. Do a Google search of "Mee Heng Low" and see what comes up (of course, Google asks "did you mean, Mee Hang Low?" Gee, never heard that one before... :)) Or click on the link below.

If you do happen to eat there, ask the owners if you can see the upstairs, because that used to be the showcase of the restaurant - original handpainted artwork on the walls in one dining room, and beautiful silk embroidered art in the other. Kinda sad that they don't even open the upstairs to business anymore.

we need another good restaurant to try in SLO so we will likely make it there some day
i kinda figured that if i called you on it that it would be the one time it was real
so what does 'mee heng low' mean?

No hard feelings - who knows what is real on this blog. Remember, I'm the DOMM (Dazzling Oriental Man of Mystery). I don't know how good the food is anymore, but they do apparently do a nice takeout business.
I never got a good translation of what Mee Heng Low means, but there are some chinese symbols above the door that mean "good smelling food". I guess I should ask my parents - probably something I should know after all these years. There was a restaurant two doors down that was Shanghai Low, but it is gone. Sad that our restaurant and the Historic landmark Ah Louis Building are the only remnants left of SLO's Chinatown.

Not so many classic lines on this leg, but here are some that are worth a mention (all from Mr. Sherwen):
- They look like men committed to being caught
- As they say in English, things are getting a little lumpy towards the end
- ...one or two riders popping!
- You wanna beat me you come by right now!
- Hhhhhhhhigh-ay-doooooooooo!!!
But possibly the most classic moment was when the Toyota team guys were huddling around their teammate the stage winner, and the guy with the name, "Friedick" came up to get in the group hug. I guess Bobke read it as, "Fried dick" because there was this high pitched one second laugh. I'll see if I can capture that moment...

Damn, cars don't go as fast as these guys were going down Chorro Street (at the end). There are a couple of little risers that they made look like they were flat. Amazing. It was pretty cool recognizing exactly where the riders were from my 22 years growing up on the Central Coast (no, not Southern California like someone said at the start of the coverage). Very cool.
